In this classic work, Leo Strauss examines the problem of natural right and argues that there is a firm foundation in reality for the distinction between right and wrong in ethics and politics. On the centenary of Strauss's birth, and the fiftieth anniversary of the Walgreen Lectures which spawned the work, Natural Right and History remains as controversial and essential as ever. "Strauss ...makes a significant contribution towards an understanding of the intellectual crisis in which we find ourselves ...[and] brings to his task an admirable scholarship and a brilliant, incisive mind."--John H. Hallowell, American Political Science Review Leo Strauss (1899-1973) was the Robert Maynard Hutchins Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Political Science at the University of Chicago.

Worth reading again and again and again...
评分I stopped so many times that I couldn't believe I finally finish the book. Strauss has pictured a big enough one for me to paint the line of history, however only the starting point. I don't know how long it will take to finish. Maybe, it is not even necessary to finish the line. I believe it must a circle, a zero, or nothing.
评分THE classic on the debate between ancients and moderns on natural right/law. The best chapter, it seems to me, is the third one on the discovery of nature and its preconditions - worthy of comparison with his teacher Heidegger's "ontological" or "ontic" take.
评分The change of the meaning of "natural right" from classical to modern thought is accompanied by the establishment of a human-centric cosmology. Man becomes the judge and legislator of his own, not because of his reason but because of his desire & passion. By replacing "history process" for "the end", modern political philosophy falls into nihilism.
