Victor Hugo (1802-85) wrote volumes of criticism, Romantic costume dramas, satirical verse and political journalism but is best remembered for his novels, especially "Notre-Dame de Paris" (1831), also known as "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame" and "Les Miserables" (1862) which was adapted into one of the most successful musicals of all time. 不論Marius和Cosette的生活多麼美麗，這個故事卻是關於The Wretched. Éponine一生沒有得到真正的愛，不論是她的父母還是Marius都未曾將她當成生命中重要的一部分，在死去的時候Éponine也知道Marius沒有一刻喜歡過她。Javert齣生於監獄，立誌成為一個正直的人，卻一輩子無法逮捕Jean Valjean. Jean Valjean也許一輩子做瞭許多善事，但他沒能滿足自己和Cosette一起好好生活的願望。Les Misérables是描述我們所有人的生活的，被命運所睏，無數的夢想未能完成，死時仍然帶著遺憾。也許隻有對上帝或是更高存在的信念是唯一的救贖。

讀的書蟲係列的那個英文普及版，精簡至此卻還能有一番體會，真好。我記得我一直更喜歡狄更斯來著。可這次讀覺得沙威太像商鞅瞭吧，不是治法之調理，而是執法之嚴神似，也是堅信“法”治方大道。酷吏自古有之且從來都不會少，可有幾個得善終的，又有幾個晚年真仔細思索自己到底值不值的，幸好想不通。
