實際上福柯後來的工作並沒有貫徹《詞與物》和《知識考古學》時期製定的更偏結構主義的綱領。福柯晚期的工作有意識地迴到瞭知識史敘事和知識主體，而不是繼續采取結構主義或者康紀萊姆那種反主體、反敘事的路綫。這本《知識考古學》能夠幫助我們理解這一時期福柯對自己研究思路的認識，但是另一方麵對我們理解成熟時期福柯的工作沒有直接幫助。

學科，discipline，就是先要去discipline學生。福柯此處說權威與作者，綫性與曆史，知識與起源。福柯70年代死於艾滋，但是他的思想永遠留存！——從今天起成為一個Foucaultian.

可以和詞與物補充閱讀，一是清楚明晰地界定和闡釋瞭詞與物中的一些術語和方法論，二是雖然知識考古學隻講理，例子不多有些枯燥，但讀過詞與物中關於語言，經濟和生物三個領域中知識型嬗變之後腦內就已經積纍瞭大量事例，再讀知識考古學會覺得越讀越清晰。
