本書是我國英語語言文學名傢、復旦大學傑齣教授陸榖孫先生在其“英美散文”課程講稿基礎上精心擴充而成，分“精讀”、“泛讀”兩部分，凡二十篇，盡為名傢妙筆。
精讀部分收錄弗吉尼亞·伍爾芙、D·H·勞倫斯、喬治·奧威爾、威廉·戈爾丁、瓊·狄迪恩、斯蒂芬·金、比爾·布萊森等作品十篇，配以詳盡的頁尾注和以“ ”起首的文中注，並附作者介紹。泛讀部分收錄伯特蘭·羅素、E·M·福斯特、E·B·懷特、戈爾·維達爾、哈羅德·品特、蘇珊·桑塔格、巴拉剋·奧巴馬等作品十篇，附頁尾簡注及作者介紹。
本書旨在提高中級以上英語學習者對現當代英美散文的解讀鑒賞能力，可作高等院校英語專業教材，也可供廣大英語愛好者修習之用。所附光盤含陸先生授“英美散文”課實況視頻若乾。

書的選篇很好，當然經典作品，和彆的選本有重復也在所難免。精讀部分是本書的精華，文中注值得一讀。泛讀部分我以為比較湊數，沒啥用處，隨便哪裏都能找到。建議如能再版，陸老可以把泛讀部分的文章一並點評瞭。
