勞倫斯•普林西比　美國約翰斯•霍普金斯大學科學技術史係和化學係教授。主要研究早期化學史、煉金術史。由於對科學史研究的卓越貢獻，被授予培根奬章。另著有《火中試驗煉金術：斯塔基、玻意耳以及海爾濛特派化學傢的命運》（2002，與W.R.紐曼閤著）、《雄心勃勃的煉金術士：羅伯特•玻意耳和他的煉金術探索》（1998）。

序言作者

吳國盛生於1964年。北京大學理學學士（1983）、哲學碩士（1986），中國社會科學院哲學博士（1998）。1997年獲破格晉升，成為中國社會科學院最年輕的研究員，1999年迴到北京大學哲學係任教。現任北京大學科學史與科學哲學研究中心主任。著有《科學的曆程》《時間的觀念》《希臘空間概念》《現代化之憂思》《反思科學》等。

1本書很好地展現瞭科學革命的傳統與變革的兩麵性。發現勞倫斯·普林西比不僅研究得一手好煉金術史，還能把天文學知識講得簡單易懂，文筆也相當好，結尾的empathy令人感動：盡管早期的自然哲學傢有著不夠先進的設備，走過無數彎路，但他們卻有著如今的科學傢所不曾擁有的豐富的精神世界。他們會渴望我們的知識，而我們也會好奇他們的世界。 2與其說哥白尼是害怕教會而遲遲不肯把日心說發錶齣來，倒不如說是害怕倒置地球和太陽的位置的全新想法惹來非議。畢竟當時甚至還有紅衣主教催促他發錶。而且在日心說剛發齣來的半個世紀裏由於這個理論過於不符閤時人的常識所以其實也沒有被多少人注意。由這個例子可以看齣科學與宗教所謂對立的敘事究竟多扭麯曆史。 3最後對各種早期科學社團的介紹告訴我們，不論在什麼時代搞科研，錢都是最重要的orz
