When Scenes of Clerical Life, George Eliot's first novel, was published anonymously in 1857, it was immediately recognized, in the words of Saturday Review, as 'the production of a peculiar and remarkable writer'. 艾略特的第一部虛構，可能有更多的"傳記"色彩，但已然有瞭典型的艾略特色彩，鄉土氣息、富有人情味的敘述者、永遠的道德主題（sympathy）。比較喜歡第三篇，很少見到19世紀傢暴、酗酒的討論，覺得很新鮮。
评分習作痕跡還是很明顯噠，早期艾略特執著於刻畫每一個無關緊要的人物，而且迫切想賦予每個人獨特特徵，結果是每看一段對話都得翻迴去看人物介紹，到底什麼特徵來著？所以高手是練齣來的，第一部小說很少盡善盡美。不過，艾略特如果活在今天，寫傢庭倫理劇肯定在行，小兩口吵架、婆婆嫌棄媳婦的橋段寫得那叫一個惟妙惟肖，我都忍不住想學吵架技巧瞭，說不定哪天派上用場呢。
