Tracy Kidder, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of the bestsellers The Soul of a New Machine, House, and the enduring classic Mountains Beyond Mountains , has been described by the Baltimore Sun as the “master of the non-fiction narrative.” In this new book, Kidder gives us the superb story of a hero for our time. Strength in What Remains is a wonderfully written, inspiring account of one man’s remarkable American journey and of the ordinary people who helped him–a brilliant testament to the power of will and of second chances.
Deo arrives in America from Burundi in search of a new life. Having survived a civil war and genocide, plagued by horrific dreams, he lands at JFK airport with two hundred dollars, no English, and no contacts. He ekes out a precarious existence delivering groceries, living in Central Park, and learning English by reading dictionaries in bookstores. Then Deo begins to meet the strangers who will change his life, pointing him eventually in the direction of Columbia University, medical school, and a life devoted to healing. Kidder breaks new ground in telling this unforgettable story as he travels with Deo back over a turbulent life in search of meaning and forgiveness.
An extraordinary writer, Tracy Kidder once again shows us what it means to be fully human by telling a story about the heroism inherent in ordinary people, a story about a life based on hope.
Tracy Kidder is an American author and Vietnam War veteran. Kidder may be best known, especially within the computing community, for his Pulitzer Prize-winning The Soul of a New Machine, an account of the development of Data General's Eclipse/MV minicomputer. The book typifies his distinctive style of research. He began following the project at its inception and, in addition to interviews, spent considerable time observing the engineers at work and outside of it. Using this perspective he was able to produce a more textured portrait of the development process than a purely retrospective study might.
Kidder followed up with House, in which he chronicles the design and construction of the award-winning Souweine House in Amherst, Massachusetts. House reads like a novel, but it is based on many hours of research with the architect, builders, clients, in-laws, and other interested parties.
In 2003, Kidder also published Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure The World after a chance encounter with Paul Farmer. The book was held to wide critical acclaim and became a New York Times bestseller. The actor Edward Norton has claimed it was one of the books which has had a profound influence on him.

Upon encountering the title "Strength in What Remains," my mind immediately conjured an image of a solitary figure standing against a desolate landscape, yet radiating an indomitable spirit. I am perpetually fascinated by narratives that explore the extraordinary resilience of the human psyche when faced with unimaginable loss and devastation. This title, to me, is not merely a description, but a profound statement about the enduring nature of the human spirit. It suggests a journey not of acquisition, but of discovery – the discovery of what truly matters, what is indelible, even when everything else has been obliterated. I envision a story that meticulously unpacks the layers of this "remaining strength," exploring its genesis, its manifestations, and its transformative power. It is, I believe, a testament to the idea that true strength lies not in what we possess, but in what we are, at our very core. I yearn to immerse myself in a narrative that will not only recount tales of survival but will also offer profound insights into the psychological and emotional architecture that allows individuals to not just endure, but to rebuild, to reclaim, and ultimately, to triumph over their circumstances. This is more than just a book; it's an exploration of the fundamental elements that constitute our humanity, and the powerful, often underestimated, force that resides within us.
评分《Strength in What Remains》——这个书名在我心中荡漾开一股关于生命韧性的深刻涟 the feeling that one has survived the worst. It hints at a resilience that is not about brute force, but about an inner core that endures. I've always been drawn to stories of survival, not just the physical act of living, but the emotional and psychological battle that accompanies it. This title suggests a narrative that delves into the essence of what remains after everything else has been stripped away. It speaks of an intrinsic strength, a part of oneself that cannot be extinguished by external circumstances. I anticipate a story that explores how individuals find this inner fortitude, how they reconstruct their lives and their identities from the fragments left behind. It's not just about enduring hardship, but about thriving in its aftermath, finding purpose and meaning in what remains. I hope the book will illuminate the quiet victories, the subtle acts of defiance against despair, and the profound ability of the human spirit to find light even in the deepest darkness. It’s a promise of a narrative that will resonate with anyone who has faced adversity and discovered their own hidden reservoirs of strength.

评分写的比shake hands with devil和we were informed tonight we will be killed节奏要更好,将亲历者在genocide中的经历和之后的生活整合在一起。 You may not see the ocean, but right now we are in the middle of the ocean, and we have to keep swimming."
Insightful look into the scene of what it's like to live among a war, being a refugee in one's own home, having no destination to escape to. But, also, how much can a person's inner strength can achieve.
