3.5/5 This is an fascinating portrait of an equally fascinating man Christ Knight, known as the North Pond Hermit in Central Maine. Finkel's words are succinct and reflective of his own ruminations on solitude, nature vs. nurture and the meaning of life. But somehow I wish the book dealt with the eremitic philosophy on life with more force.

Finkel's words are succinct and reflective of his own ruminations on solitude, nature vs. nurture and the meaning of life. But somehow I wish the book dealt with the eremitic philosophy on life with more force.

作者会讲故事，我以为就是平铺直叙，没想到他居然跟做研究一样从很多个角度切入讲述一个人的故事。克里斯独自一人在林中居住了27年，野外生存并非易事，他不是终日悠闲地待在林子里餐风饮露，他面临的挑战和焦虑，也不少。作者试图探究他为何选择隐匿在林中。他是遭受什么创伤？精神疾病？克里斯本人也数次思考这个，他说并没有什么逻辑推演，他只是遵循一种本能，走入了森林。后来，当克里斯因入室盗窃被捕，刑满释放之后被困在人类社会中，作者突然明白了他为何步入林中，因为人类社会使他很痛苦，他的归属，只能是森林。我在康涅狄格州的小镇上住了一年了，这一年来我时常觉得我如同隐士。小镇上几乎看不到行人，站在街上，永远觉得世界刚被僵尸扫荡过。镇上除了一家影院，几家酒吧，没有什么娱乐活动。在这样的环境，克里斯居然还是要逃离人类
