英国思想史学者，曾任剑桥大学麦克唐纳考古研究所研究员，《新社会》杂志副主编，为《泰晤士报》、《纽约时报》、《观察家》等报纸撰写过专栏，以拒绝简化的恢宏思想史作品闻名于西方世界，著有《思想史：从火到弗洛伊德》、《20世纪思想史：从弗洛伊德到互联网》、《德国天才》、《大分离：新旧大陆分道扬镳的历史》等。

评分最近随意地读。 书是好书，翻译却有待改进：无论是文笔、措辞还是忠于原作。 第四章最后一节把孔子的“LI”翻译成“理”，叫人难以原谅。
评分我总觉得，写这样一本思想史的大书是很多知识分子的梦想。但很少有人有足够勇气把它变成现实。沃森一个人把它写了出来，900多页，110万字，所以我把他看作是司马迁、吉本一样的知识英雄。 既然是史书，就得先考虑撰述体例。绝大多数史书都会按照历史顺序来陈述，毕竟时间之箭...
