This book happened because I was worried and bewil-
dered about changes in my own breasts. As I talked to
other women, I found that many of them shared my
concerns~and that few of them were getting the
answers they needed.
I was fortunate enough to discover the Breast
Health Center at Children s Hospital of San Fran-
cisco. They helped me, and then agreed to collaborate
on a book to share their information and practical
counsel with women everywhere.
This book is not about breast cancer. It s about all
the breast changes that aren t breast cancer, from the
most innocent general lumpiness through breast car-
cinoma in situ (noninvasive breast carcinoma)~a
topic of special interest to the breast team at Chil-
dren s Hospital. (Doctors still disagree on whether
breast carcinoma in situ is properly classified as the
last stage in a continuum of benign breast changes or
as an early cancer.)
My thanks go to the members (current and for-
mer) of the breast health team at Children s Hospital:
Cathy Coleman, R.N., nurse specialist; Patricia T.
Kelly, Ph.D., medical geneticist; Michael D. Lagios,
M.D., pathologist; Frederick Margolin, M.D., radiolo-
gist; Pat Kizpolski McCarthy, R.N., MSN, oncology
nurse consultant; Jon Ross, M.D., pathologist; and
Philip Westdahl, M.D., surgeon. Not only did they pro-
vide information and moral support, but also edito-
rial review of the manuscript. I am also grateful to
Virginia Griswold, M.D., radiologist; David A. Wood,
M.D., cancer researcher; Carolyn Gale Anderson,
masseuse; and Edwin Silverberg, statistician, Ameri-
can Cancer Society, New York for their assistance.
I thank the members of my own breast health
team: Peter Sapienza, M.D., surgeon and Richard
Dorsay, M.D., radiologist with the Kaiser-Permanente
