两大家族有着很深的世仇。在一次宴会上，两家的子女罗密欧与朱丽叶一见钟情。花前月下，他们互诉衷肠，私订终身，并在好心的神父劳伦斯的主持下举行了婚礼。谁知，罗密欧杀死了朱丽叶的堂兄提伯尔特，被逐出维罗纳城。朱丽叶的父亲却逼她嫁给帕里斯伯爵。朱丽叶向劳伦斯神父求助。她吞服安眠药，以假死来搪塞帕里斯的求婚。不明真相的家人为朱丽叶送葬。这时罗密欧悄悄地潜回了维罗纳城，他以为朱丽叶已死，喝下毒药倒在朱丽叶的身边。朱丽叶苏醒后，惊喜地发现心上人就在身旁，却已经死了，于是毅然用短剑结束了自己的生命。一对情人殉情而死。他们的鲜血终于换来两家的和解。
