The use of case studies to build and test theories in political science and the other social sciences has increased in recent years. Many scholars have argued that the social sciences rely too heavily on quantitative research and formal models and have attempted to develop and refine rigorous methods for using case studies. This text presents a comprehensive analysis of research methods using case studies and examines the place of case studies in social science methodology. It argues that case studies, statistical methods, and formal models are complementary rather than competitive. The book explains how to design case study research that will produce results useful to policymakers and emphasizes the importance of developing policy-relevant theories. It offers three major contributions to case study methodology: an emphasis on the importance of within-case analysis, a detailed discussion of process tracing, and development of the concept of typological theories. Case Studies and Theory Development in the Social Sciences will be particularly useful to graduate students and scholars in social science methodology and the philosophy of science, as well as to those designing new research projects, and will contribute greatly to the broader debate about scientific methods.

三星半，雖然講得對，但是在現實的研究中還是很難實現的……方法論上有指導意義，但是對於實際研究的幫助僅限於不要犯書中提到的這些錯誤，建設性的指導很少……

评分寫的很羅嗦。但是結構設置上比rethinking social inquiry要更適閤做教材。主要談process-tracing和typological theory在theory development的意義和操作原則。主要還是用的比較政治的例子。對一些因果機製和因果識彆過程中的邏輯問題梳理的還算清楚。但看瞭趙鼎新的文章http://www.chinesepen.org/blog/archives/57839，又虛無瞭。。。
评分書是好書，但是就是太囉嗦瞭，而且行文有點雜亂，感覺並沒有照顧各個章節的關係
评分too much unnecessary jargon. 不過做個早期階段的guideline還是可以的。
