在這之前讀的那本小說太爛，使得這本顯得格外的好。兩本小說的共同之處很多，中國移民的故事，在故事的開端交代一個人的消失，過去和現在的兩條故事綫交織在一起，故事的主人公背負著過往的曆史，通過追尋過往來探尋我是誰的問題。這個故事的結尾，媽媽和兒子都舒展開來瞭，unclench，不再是一團揉皺的紙。人生故事的模式之一，無關乎你經曆過什麼，你在哪兒，你的經濟社會地位如何，你有怎樣的勃勃野心，一切的一切都不重要，唯一要緊的是，如何使那張揉皺瞭的紙展平，活齣一種最舒服的狀態。

A story made up of bittersweet, fluorescent Polaroid photos. Ko does a great job constructing beautiful moments with her literary wizardry. Polly Guo, a romantic and resolved mother whose desire to pursue the sometimes fearsome freedom has been tied down by her connection with her son, is one of the most refreshing mother characters in modern lit.

reads like a book that grew from a concept (what deportation does to separated families) - story feels predictable (but hey that's because it's in recent news, and because it grew out of Ko reading the news). Hated the unnatural and heavyhanded flourishes of the prose. the chineseness feels inauthentic. Is Polly blameless as the book suggests? (No)
