出生在天主教家庭的美国学者，在西宁进行1年的田野调查，探讨中国的赛莱菲耶、台布里厄、皈信穆斯林、全球乌玛，是前沿、现实、敏感的主题，钦佩作者的学术追求与眼光。 本书纰漏不少，首先作者关于中国伊斯兰教的知识储备不足：华寺门宦不属于嘎得忍耶，是虎夫耶的支系；马明心不是霍加阿法格的弟子；西宁人数最多的苏菲派不是嘎得忍耶，而是虎夫耶。 其次作者的结论与批判缺乏客观、以偏概全，武断和误读源于他未对田野成果展开对话，未对访谈内容，尤其是存在异议的内容认真商榷。受访人中缺乏精英和学者的观点，因此十分片面。人与田野是一个对话的过程，如果没有对话和思辨，田野中的很多东西就被遮蔽。作者走的是人类学的路子，但是缺乏人类学的思维方式。
