作者 | 柳原汉雅（Hanya Yanagihara），1974年生于洛杉矶，美籍日裔女作家。1995年于史密斯女子学院毕业后搬至纽约。2015年开始担任《纽约时报》旗下时尚杂志《T》主编。《渺小一生》是她的第二部长篇小说，荣获科克斯评论文学奖，入围布克奖、美国国家图书奖、国际IMPAC都柏林文学奖、橘子小说奖等四项文学大奖决选名单。

I can't even think about it without crying. There are people in this world who deserve happiness more than anyone else but can never be happy. And there are people who love these people but can't live through a single day without agony knowing that they can be of little help. Love cannot heal everything, yet people still want to believe in it.

基本上很贊同Daniel Mendelsohn的評論。開首不俗，描寫細膩到位，但中後期，角色的比例和置放嚴重失衡，開始只聚焦在Jude一人身上。Jude的段落的確淒慘（也有點慘過了頭強造悲劇），但其他角色的生命難道就不值得寫。角色全靠痛苦來篡權。議題先行和受害者至上的文化，易令文學判斷失焦。要說這書與性別或者性取向有關也很牽強。硬要數算，小說裡唯一寫最好的角色是JB，但他即使沉淪毒海也無法力挽狂瀾，淡出了。而書中的人物事業愛情都飛黃騰達到一個地步，失真，令人難以投入，只覺得在翻一冊沒完沒了的Lifestyle Porn。

挺惨的很好读但觉得很多地方惨得实在没必要惨过了头就怎么说呢……大概就像布罗茨基所讲的这个娘娘腔的时代就是需要作家刻薄残酷人们在娘娘腔时代就只能卖血腥和垃圾否则就卖不出去（大意如此）反正……就这一点来讲觉得有点糟糕只有一点点糟糕
