這本選集是從葛傳椝先生的三本選集《葛傳椝英文集（Man and Student）》、《英文芻言（A Word to the Wise）》和《英文作文教本（A Textbook of English Composition）》中選齣論述學習英語的三十七篇文章編成的。每篇揭 示一個或兩個問題，大都是英語語法書和英語修辭學書所不曾講到的。內容談到什麼讀物是初學者需要讀的和什麼是不宜讀的；怎樣纔能讀得精細；說、讀和寫的關係；以及拘泥語法條條，一概類推所造成的錯誤等問題。
著者簡介
葛傳椝（1906-1992），復旦大學教授，上世紀50年代復旦大學英語語言文學係“三巨頭”之一。幼時傢境清貧，初中輟學後，自學英語。1921年考入上海電報傳習所，翌年至崇明縣立中學任教。1925年起任上海商務印書館英語編輯，直至八一三中日淞滬戰爭爆發。任職其間發現很多英語單詞的中文詞意義相同，而英語的習慣錶述卻差異很大，即以6年時間編寫《英語習慣用法詞典》，於1942年齣版，是為中國人編寫的第一部英語慣用法詞典。在查閱《簡明牛津詞典》（The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English） 時，發現其中不少錯誤，即緻信詞典主編英人福勒 (H.W. Fowler)，為福勒所欽佩。之後，為中華書局、競文書局編寫英語讀本。1945年起任教於上海光華大學。中華人民共和國成立後，接上級教育主管單位命令，1951年光華大學與大夏大學閤並成立華東師範大學，繼續在此執教至1954年，繼而調往復旦大學外文係任教，直至1986年退休。1992年7月在上海逝世 。著有久負盛名的《英漢四用詞典》，《新英漢詞典》（主要編纂者之一），以及《英語慣用法詞典》、《英語寫作》，被學界譽為一代宗師、英語慣用法權威，為中國英語教育界先驅之一。

葛傳槼先生的三十七篇文章，文短而詞豐，言簡而意賅。雖為數十年前的文字，卻直陳國人英語學習的痛腳，至今仍不過時，此般遠見卓識，難怪文冤閣大學士作序不亦樂乎瞭。

评分英文係三大元老之一葛老的名作，今年七月再版新印，其對英文愛好者的諄諄教誨，到現在也有指導性意義。幾個收貨：1.學習英文要靠精讀，讀物要選擇近期英語母語寫作的短片上乘之作。2.學習詞匯要靠英英詞典，積纍的不僅是中譯，更是用法。3.寫作時隻選用你見到過的錶達方式，不可臆造。4.學習英語之路要細、專、久，要多背多朗讀。有句話怎麼說得來著？真正厲害的人下的都是很功夫。

评分中英雙語，短小精悍。有一種大道微言的意味，中國人用英語寫書譯成漢語卻有一種日本人的感覺。另外知乎大V們大概有很多就是兜售的這本書裏的觀點吧？
