安德魯•羅伯茨（Andrew Roberts），英國皇傢文學學會和皇傢藝術學會會員，傑齣的傳記作傢和曆史學傢，著有《索爾茲伯裏：維多利亞女王時代的泰坦》（獲1999年沃爾夫森曆史奬）、《戰爭風雲：第二次世界大戰新史》等諸多廣受贊譽的著作，他還是諸多英國報紙的撰稿人。為撰寫本書，他先後走訪瞭位於俄羅斯、白俄羅斯、以色列、比利時、意大利、捷剋、奧地利、德國、法國的拿破侖戰場（60處中的53處），並去聖赫勒拿島調研。他關於拿破侖的三集電視短劇也在BBC2颱放映。

评分細節和大事敘述兼顧，評價均衡。拿破侖最大的貢獻是拿破侖法典和中央行政製度。拿破侖的成敗齣於他的天纔，性格和運氣。後期沒有意識到政治，經濟，軍事嚮不利他的方嚮的從量到質的變化，是他下坡的重要原因。 書中過多提到惠靈頓的評價，意圖達到冥冥的效果，有些做作，減一顆星。
