不够中立，但补充了最近着迷的地中海文化的知识空白。前后很不错，但中间靠后细碎地讲某人的功德与生平，线索不明，读起来较挣扎。作为安德鲁西亚度假读物合适不过。一细节有趣：1492后许诺的宗教自由并未被遵守，众人假装改教，于是吃什么肉成了验证法，这可能是西班牙多jamon的原因吧

从711到1492的西班牙，每一个世纪讲述一个人或一件事。最早读Peter the Venerable在Toledo写的讲述他如何翻译可兰经的信件是两年以前，当时只把它当做一个语言课的文本。如今这本书把它放在第一次十字军东征、伊比利亚半岛Toledo的攻克、还有Cluny修道院和Cistercian Barnard of Clairvaux的不合等语境下看。中世纪欧洲牵一发而动全身；本书的叙事让人赞叹。尽管Harold Bloom在序言说，作者过渡美化了中世纪西班牙的不同宗教的和谐“共存。”
