J. D'E. Firth is the chaplain and assistant master of Winchester College.
In writing this book I have tried to keep the balance, so far as is possible, between the requirements of the general reader and of the Wykehamist. I have also had much in mind the contemporary social revolution, to which the Public Schools are especially vulnerable. This is no time for hanging out faded banners or putting on a tattoo; and I have sought always to present the story of Winchester College in its relation and adjustment to political and ideological movements in the national life as a whole.
