It was on a visit to Rome that he conceived the idea of his magnificent and panoramic history The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (6 vol., 1776--88) which won immediate acclaim, despite some harsh criticism. Gibbon himself was assured of the greatness of his work, which is, indeed, one of the most-read historical works of modern times.

这本书的翻译坏到了不可思议的地步。不要说信达雅这些东西，基本的语法都不同，英文里的从句原封不动地变成中文，结果结构混乱不堪，一个长句子可以没有一个主语，也可以有七八个主语。从句和主句结构不分。读起来让人憋气。 我就不理解：哪怕粗略一翻，就会发现无数读不通的病...
