Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine s father. After Mr Earnshaw s death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine s brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

第一次讀完英文原版。真的邊看邊覺得艾米麗勃朗特是天纔作傢。我被小說的氛圍感染得都不願走齣來。

在《呼嘯山莊》麵前,我的心髒永遠不夠強壯,這個抑鬱、扭麯、歇斯底裏的愛情故事讀起來讓人心力交瘁。印象中有評論傢刻薄地寫到:“艾米麗在寫到一半時怎麼竟沒有自殺?”Well, nobody knows. Heathcliff在摯愛Catherine死前說:“May you not rest, as long as I am living. You said I killed you—haunted me, then.” 對我來說,這部放在書架上的Wuthering Heights本身,就是一副不散的陰魂。
