Jung-ling's family considers her bad luck because her mother died giving birth to her. They discriminate against her and make her feel unwanted yet she yearns and continuously strives for her parents' love. Her stepmother is vindictive and cruel and her father dismissive. Jung-ling grows up to be an academic child, with a natural ability for writing. Only her aunt and grandfather offer her any love and kindness. The story is of survival in the light of the mental and physical cruelty of her stepmother and the disloyalty of her siblings. Jung-ling blossoms in spite of everything and the story ends as her father agrees to let her study in England.

要不是為瞭堅持打卡，真看不下去。 前言還以為重在講述女兒當自強，結果通篇顧影自憐。戰亂年代花著父母的錢養尊處優、留洋讀書，然後在父母去世後齣書指責父母不愛自己，這種人不是很讓我瞧得上。 最後還附言痛斥繼母，講述自己如何因遺囑糾紛迴想起血粼粼的童年以緻寫瞭本《葉落歸根》，"to everyone's surprise, Falling Leaves became an international bestseller."，我還真對這種書能暢銷頗為吃驚。 盡管人到中年，作者仍是一個活在自己童話世界裏的小女孩。為什麼姑姑好？因為無條件愛她。她有幸有爺爺這樣一位睿智的人生導師，卻不曾用心感悟爺爺的教誨。當然，也不排除這兩位人物在作者筆下被美化的可能。 人真的要懂得感恩啊，滿腹怨言的人生有何意義。
评分Read this right after I finished the youth edition of her memoir. I read it just as voraciously as I did the children's one. A really great memoir.
评分真的覺得非常之悲慘，被自己的哥哥姐姐欺負，還被自己的後媽欺負，爸爸也不管她，想到鴨子死的那一幕，心痛不能自已！
评分中間幾章比較精彩。作者的情感錶達略over，感覺刻意放大自己的不幸，我更喜歡用事實說話的類型。如果不是英文讀物，真的可能中途棄書。
评分主角很悲劇，一齣生就導緻娘難産死亡，於是連父親也把她給遺忘瞭，父親的漠視成瞭她一輩子心口的傷。。。在天津法租界，上海法租界呆過後，49年去瞭香港，讀的教會“天主教”寄宿學校，因為一篇戲劇劇本編寫比賽獲一等奬，纔得到父親支持去英國留學。。。如果沒有爺爺給她輸入的信念，她肯定繼續悲劇的一生。人可以改變命運，更需要能灌輸你信念的人的支持。。。
