将近500页，从1834年第一位踏上美国土地（AFONG MOY，在纽约市的博物馆作为“文化展品”）的中国女性，历经三次移民大潮，19世纪中期的淘金热，20世纪6，70年代港台留学热，到80年代以后大陆出国热。早期华人多受排斥歧视，种种不公正待遇与压迫，包括著名的排华法案，胼手胝足挣扎求存，修TRANCONTINENTAL RAILWAY时吃苦耐劳，足智多谋，工作进度极快，还组织过罢工，远非五四文学里所描述的麻木愚弱的国民形象。从序言里的PERPETUAL STRANGERS ON BOTH SHORES,到后记里提问:WHAT IS RACIAL IDENTITY? WHO GETS TO DECIDE IT?作为校友，向张纯如的努力和思考致敬
