一部简明扼要叙述美国华人的艰难移民史，从加州淘金运动的排华法案，到越南战争前后在美科学家的被排挤，再到80年代弥漫于整个社会对于华裔的歧视。美国社会对于外民族的歧视自始至终魅影随行，作者在书中不断地在阐明这个道理，甚至但凡在海外生活过的人都能感受到高加索人的虚伪，但又为什么有无数人前仆后继的往国外移民，在书中作者用福建人做例子揭示了问题的答案，想要赚更多的钱，更稳定的生活，更自由的环境，如是而已。

张纯如用一颗悲悯的同理心按历史脉络描写美国华人的奋斗与挣扎，成就与挫折，悲欢与离合。美国没有我们想象中那么自由。结尾提出racial本质上应该是由自己定义的东西。很好看，看完陷入想去美国却去不成的深深失落之中，希望有一天至少有能力去那儿旅游。（140515-0621至105页;150414-4.21用透析法每天读40+花七天读完了剩下的部分。【中大图书馆】）
