《美國政治思想經典文獻選讀》同其他一些美國政治思想讀物的一個不同之處，是它不僅編選瞭主流思想傢、政治傢的名篇，還收進瞭諸如馬爾科姆•X這類激進思想傢的言論。但正如艾薩剋所指齣的，即使處於異端的美國左翼思想傢，也大都排斥社會主義和共産主義思想，而隻是從左的方麵去批評當政者違背瞭美國賴以建國的自由主義傳統。
