While Frodo and Sam made their escape the rest of the company were attacked by Orcs. Now they continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin -- alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. Now, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, the text has been fully restored with almost 400 corrections -- with the full co-operation of Christopher Tolkien -- making it the definitive version, and as close as possible to the version that J.R.R. Tolkien intended. Also included is the original red and black map of Middle-earth as a fold-out sheet. 这本开始花开N朵，各表N枝。总体是明暗交替。Aragon等卷入人族对抗魔道的正面战场，Rohan的昏君佞臣、Isengard的Ent大战像战国般精彩。Frodo（伪）驯服Gollum作向导不能更震惊。相比西边的酣战，Sam/Frodo与孤独如影随形。结尾两章的华彩：（几乎是）打破第四面墙的对于神话、探险和自我选择的讨论，以及Sam的勇猛和抉择。真正主角其实不是表面上的那几个！
