道格·桑德斯 (Doug Saunders)
1995年加入加拿大《环球邮报》(<The Globe and Mail>)，现任《环球邮报》欧洲局负责人。桑德斯曾连续三年获得代表加拿大新闻界最高荣誉的国家新闻奖，并被誉为加拿大最好的专栏作家，其专栏内容为探究新闻背后的常识与全球趋势。
在对《美国大城市的死与生》作者雅各布斯(Jane Jacobs)的一次采访后，桑德斯萌生了撰写一部记录人口迁徙、尤其是农村到城市人口迁徙的著作的想法。从2007年开始，桑德斯开始了一场全球之旅，从欧洲出发，到印度次大陆、中国和北美，深入接触包括来自肯尼亚和里约热内卢的底层平民，足迹遍布五大洲数十个国家和地区，最终完成本书。桑德斯现居英国伦敦。
