评分Gates's narrative conveys no impression of tension in his feelings about any of the people it describes. The people in this book have color, but they lack blood. Everything bubbles along on the surface. There are evocative moments, but there is no great voice guiding the telling. Gates's talent promises a great deal more than this book delivers.
