This edition is bad. One can sense that Judith intervened much more than the previous editions. Her language is satire, biased, and worst of all, one can't know what's her standpoint. The events are unorganized, jumping here and there all over the chapters. In short, not a good writing though that period of time was fascinating.

有两点值得推崇： 1. 在全书的组织结构上，作者应该花了一番心思。虽然书题为“欧洲中世纪史”，但也涉及了之前和之后相当的历史时期。脉络分明，是了解西方历史包括政治、经济和宗教的一个很好的切入点； 2. 翻译质量上佳，这一点实属难得，无需多言。  

“中世纪”这个名词，本身就不完全具备其字面的中性色彩。“黑暗愚昧”是启蒙运动以来的思想家们为了推崇变革的意义强加于这一时代之上的标签，已不再广为世人所认同；而人们对中世纪的了解，仍然有如雾里看花。时代久远，资料和记忆湮没，自然是重要的原因；其时间空间的...
