Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, known for such classics as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. A member of the New York elite, Wharton drew on her experiences as part of society to critique its inner workings and the conflict between personal desires and societal norms. Wharton died in 1937, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

The only thing left in my head is the book is the reflextion of struggle of mind of many a man in marrige. As a girl, I feel molenchony.

评分名為innocence實則sophisticated,無論是書中人物還是文字而言。語言如簡介所說非常polished,但這種刻意的痕跡如此缺乏靈動流暢,導緻我私心認為Wharton是後天努力型的作傢;最疲倦的是大段大段裝飾性的描寫,有一定閱讀睏難因而影響觀感——然而拋開我尚需努力的詞匯量來談主題,這仍然是一個被塞進大背景的愛情故事:Ellen代錶的激情與格格不入與其說是反映美國與歐洲的衝突,不如說是婚姻中的人性爾爾。此外作者對New York不遺餘力的批判很微妙甚至適得其反:幾乎每一頁都會寫到紐約社會如何如何恪守陳規,這真的是女性作傢的細膩以及她處於局外人與局內人界限邊的模糊身份所緻嗎?或許她本人其實也樂在其中。(不過結尾真好)
