著者简介

Graham Greene was born in 1904. He worked as a journalist and critic, and in 1940 became literary editor of the Spectator. He was later employed by the Foreign Office. As well as his many novels, Graham Greene wrote several collections of short stories, four travel books, six plays, three books of autobiography, two of biography and four books for children. He also wrote hundreds of essays, and film and book reviews. Graham Greene was a member of the Order of Merit and a Companion of Honour. He died in April 1991.

第一次读是在图书馆借的英文版，后来重读中文版又是看的pdf，就一直没有这本的实体书。今天在圣莫妮卡旧书店偶然看到这一本，才3.5美元，立刻快乐买下，晚上在酒店重读。格林真的太棒了…每次读都被击中。

场景切换太频繁，即使电影这么拍也会很凌乱；很多为了社会场面的宽广而加塞的不必要的人物，比如牙医和船长一家；每个角色都脸谱化：混日子的特权警长、贫穷但有气节的群众、严酷但有信念的中尉、在多部作品出现过的酗酒神父，简直是样板戏的卡司；神父的心理活动量和他的逃亡体力消耗量同样大，但尽是相同的主题矛盾循环，毫无新意。所以这本书有政治和历史意义，但作为文学作品，水平很差。
