著者简介

William Somerset Maugham was born in Paris in 1874. He spoke French even before he spoke a word of English, a fact to which some critics attribute the purity of his style.

His parents died early and, after an unhappy boyhood, which he recorded poignantly in 'Of Human Bondage' , Maugham became a qualified physician. But writing was his true vocation. For ten years before his first success, he almost literally starved while pouring out novels and plays.

During World War I, Maugham worked for the British Secret Service . He travelled all over the world, and made many visits to America. After World War II, Maugham made his home in south of France and continued to move between England and Nice till his death in 1965.

这个值得毛姆特地用一本书还拉了哈代来垫背为她立传的女主，就是一个文学界的groupie.这本书的意义是解了作者自己的心结、满足了大众八卦的心。我反正是一点也喜欢不上这个女主，一点也感受不到她的魅力。

Rosie is among gentlemen and writers. She chose to be with gentleman. As it is said, it is impossible to be a gentleman and writer. Evil communication can corrupt good manners. Writers are good at all kinds of communication, but good behaviors are always with gentleman. At last, Rosie is a gentleman.

读得很痛苦，因为主线故事真的不算很吸引人，插叙和意识流又比较不自然。虽然偶尔讲到文坛的奇闻逸事和作者对文学、作家圈子的一些cliché非常有趣，文笔也还是一如既往的好，但我感觉这故事总像是一个道具，用来证明什么的道具，这种感觉不太喜欢吧。
