This issue of Thomistic Papers can be divided into two parts. The fast is made up of pieces which connect more or less directlywith the philosophical work of Etienne Gilson. In the first ofthese pieces John Knasas rejects the widely held view that Gilsontheologized metaphysics. Any religious believer who does philosophyin a wholehearted way will surely find that his religious convictionsinfluence his philosophical choices and directions at key points. But when does this influence transform what he or she is doingfrom metaphysics into theology? Knasas does not shrink fromthe subtlety required to answer this question; he insists that inthe end both Gilson and Thomas argue metaphysics philosophicallyrather than theologically, although they gratefully accept hintsfrom revelation as to where these arguments might be found where they might lead. The hints may be theological, butthe foundation and execution of argument are philosophical.
