Preface
The purpose of the present volume is to provide students, teachers, and
~rofessionals with a historical, conceptual, and applied resource for cross-
~ ultural counseling and psychotherapy. Cross-cultural counseling and
~sychotherapy refers to those behavior change activities which involve
:lients and therapists from different ethnocultural traditions. It is an emerg-
ng specialty area in all of the major mental health professions. It would be
ncorrect to assume that cross-cultural counseling and psychotherapy, at its
:urrent state of development, represents a formal set of therapeutic pro-
:edures and activities. He also examines the role
af indigenous therapies and the cultural bias inherent in formal counseling
tnd therapy services, the role of Westernized assumptions in shaping mental
aealth support systems, and the cultural adaptations of therapy systems. He
notes that culturally different alternatives give rise to basic problems in
delivering appropriate counseling and therapy to a culturally differentiated
population. He also points out that the cultural definition of mental health
and the effect of intercultural contact on mental health are important issues
in cross-cultural codnseling.
Norman Sundberg provides a summary of research findings on inter-
cultural mental health. The findings point out shared patterns of emphasis in
