80-5407<br >A uthor s Foreword<br > THOUGH Dirty Tricks is a work of fiction it is also a<br >serious account of the operations of clandestine intelligence and， in<br >particular， of the "deception techniques，" as the professionals call<br >them， which such work entails. It also offers a close look into the<br >minds of those who devise and perpetrate them.<br > Counter-intelligence and especially the deception of hostile intelli-<br >gence services by disinformation--the intelligence jargon for lies，<br >frame-ups， double crosses and other"dirty tricks"--has become of far<br >greater international significance than espionage in its common con-<br >cept， the surreptitious gleaning of secret information and removal of<br >documents by spies.<br > It is my view， after many years spent on the fringes of secret service<br >and security work， and occasionally inside it， that none of the inci-<br >dents presented here， however outrageous they may seem， are beyond<br >the bounds of likelihood， including those "dirty tricks" which the<br >otherwise friendly British and American secret services may play on<br >each other. Indeed， some are based on genuine events that have come<br >to my knowledge through personal friendship with men who have<br >served in the fields I describe.<br > So， once again， in a work of fiction I have to record my debt to<br >senior officials past and present in the Secret Intelligence Service<br >(M 16)， the Security Service (M 15)， Defence Intelligence， the Foreign<br >Office， the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency， the Pentagon， and to<br >certain members of the KGB.<br >
