PREFACE This book has been written out of my belief that the tenets of faith in Jesus Christ and the gifts of his Holy Spiritï¼Œ as highlighted throughout the Bibleï¼Œ represent God s solution for the problems we men face today. We can only come to a place of rest in our souls as we grow in faith and begin to truly comprehend that God is able to "supply all [our] need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Phil. 4:19). These spiritual riches include the promised Holy Spirit whose aim is to transform us into the likeness of Christ. We see in Scripture that the Holy Spirit generally helps us grow in faith through the application of the Christian disciplines in our life such as prayerï¼Œ fastingï¼Œ fellowshipï¼Œ Bible studyï¼Œ and the "gifts of the Spirit." Spiritual gifts are ways the Holy Spirit may choose to manifest himself and demonstrate his presence and power in a person s life. In this regardï¼Œ I believe that the git~ of speaking in tongues (as a manifestation) is extremely relevant for Christians todayï¼Œ as I dis- cuss more fully in chapter 13. Though not for everyoneï¼Œ I have found that the gift of tongues is one of the means God has of translating us out of our ordinary way of viewing things and into an extraordinary appreciation of how the Lord is able to do more for us than we could ever ask or even imagine (Eph. 3:10).
