The purpose of this book is to identify problems encountered in one area of social scientific inquiry and to offer some solutions to them. But the identification of problems is not independent of the proposed solutions; both are based on a set of assumptions about the accepted goals and the postulated model of inquiry. Since the study of societies lies at the crossroad of several models of science, these assumptions are of crucial importance. As different models of science persist within and between various branches of the study of society, an attempt will be made to state some assumptions of the set of recommendations that will be presented. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5星。这本书很好地回答了什么值得被称为是“比较（政治）研究”，也就是回答了如果你自称是做比较政治学的人，你应该做什么、怎么做的问题。强烈推荐阅读引言和前四章。读完之后，我就明白普老师和我导师为什么老逼着我到非中国场景下验证我的理论。如果你没时间阅读这本书，我简要总结几点：比较政治学不是（非美国的）区域研究的集合，恰恰相反，它的最终使命是把国家名称从解释社会现象中完全去除掉，比较政治学的目标是发现具有一般性的社会规律，并且在不同的社会中检验。以往有人认为一些国家因为文化、历史、经济制度都太不相同，所以无法比较，作者恰恰认为这才是对检验理论最好的比较场景——如果理论在非常不同的几个国家中都得到了验证，恰恰说明理论的解释性强。另外，作者隐约在鼓励我们不要陷入细枝末节的区域研究中去，要关心大问题。
