Andrew Eisenberg, Ph.D. (1991) in History, University of Washington, Seattle, is Associate Professor of History at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago. He has published essays on Classical Chinese political history in the journals T'ang Studies, Theory and Society, and T'oung Pao. This is his first full length monograph.

考试前读了二三十页，考试后读完，因为这本书写得实在是太好看了。从北魏献文帝、北齐武成后主、北周宣帝到唐高祖太宗，作者对北方各个君主的心态和政治决策做了极其细致和大胆的分析。一定程度上，这本书的结论显得猜测成分很多，最后与卡佩王朝的对比力图在说明pre-modern时期的世界史共性，这些不是很能接受。但是，本书对皇权对于宫廷政治力量参与者控制手法的阐述很有启发，如以退位来稳定继承顺序、以军功来弥补内廷政治失败、以继承人斗争来实现新旧官僚代替。如果说高宗武后朝开始瓦解的关陇集团可以看做是北族传统的延续，那么皇权与氏族力量的斗争以实现皇帝集权早在这之前就已经开始，而随着北朝历史的进展，可以看出君主在君权把握的实力和策略上都有了长足的进步。以后如果有能力和时间，非常希望能够把本书译成中文。
