The novel charts the intellectual, moral, and sexual development of Stephen Dedalus, from his childhood listening to his father's stories through his schooldays and adolescence to the brink of adulthood and independence, and his awakening as an artist. Growing up in a Catholic family in Dublin in the final years of the nineteenth century, Stephen's consciousness is forged by Irish history and politics, by Catholicism and culture, language and art. Stephen's story mirrors that of Joyce himself, and the novel is both startlingly realistic and brilliantly crafted. 费劲。涉及大量当时爱尔兰的宗教、政治、历史背景，尤其是第五章不看注释根本看不明白。第一二章最好。第三章几乎全是牧师的retreat，什么鬼？Joyce是我目前所读过的英语作家里最好的prose writer，第三章写成这样不可饶恕。
