著者簡介

Leo Damrosch is the Ernest Bernbaum Professor of Literature Emeritus at Harvard University. His previous works include the National Book Critics Circle Award winner Jonathan Swift: His Life and His World, and Eternity's Sunrise: The Imaginative World of William Blake. He lives in Newton, MA.

London Literary Society 的前傳，其實就是約翰遜博士，和約翰遜博士跟班、傳記作者Boswell的閤傳，再兼及俱樂部幾個最有名的成員。Boswell決定瞭這本書八卦的性質，適閤睡前和飛機上的閱讀。但Leo Damrosch溫和的氣質不太適閤八卦，比起Menand的《形而上學俱樂部》缺少煽情點，文筆也缺點那種改變或者定義一個時代的蓬勃之氣。

年底美劇電影一大堆，花瞭近三個星期纔讀完。書名應該改為 <俱樂部的幾位成員>纔是，The Club這個書名起大瞭，想必作者也很清楚，隻是The Club看起來更高大上，更吸人眼球。全書沒有把俱樂部作為一個整體來寫，沒有記錄俱樂部的活動，沒有說明俱樂部在曆史上的地位和作用，隻是簡要記錄瞭幾位主要成員的生平，其中以Samuel Johnson和James Boswell兩人為主，有不少私生活軼事。如果想要瞭解這兩個人的話，值得一看。如果看過《The Life of Samuel Johnson》那麼這書可能意義不大，因為它簡直就是《The Life of Samuel Johnson》的長篇書評。文筆不錯，條理清晰，文字簡練優美，嚴謹中不乏幽默，查瞭一下，作者是美國人，這樣的文筆很難得瞭。四星。
