Outsiders is the clearest, if not quite the earliest, statement of the “labeling” approach to the study of deviance, the idea that deviance is not a quality of a bad person but the result of someone defining someone’s activity as bad. The idea is illustrated in two chapters on musicians and two on marihuana smoking.

deviance is a process. both equations should be taken into account to study the process. be sympathetic and patient.

评分研究生時代的作品，和Goffman一樣初版1963。這本是1973版翻印，比初版添瞭一章“標簽理論再思考”（最後一章）——為瞭解釋對標簽“學說”的攻擊。Becker沒把Labeling說成是theory，甚至要求不這麼說，且對兩個方嚮的攻擊（1左派Gouldner對他做學問的態度；2對社會問題的定義）隻是簡單迴應。日後忙著做藝術社會學去瞭：）。當下的批評見Abbott2001第三章。【不過這個風格確實可以說“真他媽芝加哥”】
评分啃英文原著有點難，但是對構建一個越軌社會學的思維體係是蠻有用的
评分好一個Moral Entrepreneurs！ 原先是為瞭Becoming a Marihuana User而來，結果Becker的大腿真沒有抱錯。第一章把握Deviance非常精準，在代入“反叛”判斷前應思考是誰樹立瞭這個局、這些規章，從而到第二章談Sequential Model,人是如何一步步開始進入“反叛”、並規避風險和道德指責，接受、內化“反叛者”這個身份，甚至與他人脫節。畢竟單一地觀察Simultaneous，並不能幫助我們理解“反叛”這個復雜的現象。最精彩的當屬是第七第八章，Moral Entrepreneurs這個詞真是太有意思瞭，大麻就是極好的例子！Rule Creators本身將道德enforce在他人身上，甚至成為一個“惡性”循環，不斷將更多的道德綁架於人，值得重讀 M
