grew up in Arizona desert in 1930s great depression, parents had no college education, mother died early, father committed suicide, married math prof, supervised by Tarski in logic and number theory, proved Hilberts' 10th problem together with David Martin and Yuri Matijasevich, elected as 1st female president of National Academy of Science.
