比剧好看

觉得前面有些枯燥无味不过后半部分精彩

封面的一句话文案（“纽约第一个连环杀手的落网”）和开头几章对一些历史人物（包括但不限于罗斯福和芝加哥的著名连环杀手霍尔姆斯医生）的提及会让人误以为这是个true crime类的“历史再现”类故事——作者好像当初也用类似的手法忽悠过他的编辑。不过这是个纯虚构的案件。除了罗斯福之外，负责破案的几位都是虚构人物，整体的风格像是试图用刚刚被发明的科学破案手段和心理学理论，在19世纪末的纽约寻找一个作案手法跟“开膛手杰克”一样血腥的连环杀手。移民开始涌入的年代的纽约入夜后光怪陆离的样子被写得有点像狄更斯的伦敦，时代感和惊悚感都设计得很到位，只出场一次的角色也都很有辨识度。

不记得哪位作家写过:侦探小说家写作有套路，总是带着读者的心来进行一场“旅行”，但令人讨厌的是他们控制节奏，总是忍不住显摆自己的知识。 我觉得这部小说很符合这一评价。特别是结尾，都过去23年了，还没有交代医生研究出来多重人格，那么这几段纯粹就是多余的，结尾就在当年结案好了。
