評分50年代的美国在二战后蓬勃发展, 著名作家Steinbeck在1962决定开始一个新的旅程和他的狗Charley看看这个国家究竟变成怎么样. 讨论了旅游癖, 寂寞的人, 城市化, 壮丽的美国风光, 种族的仇恨, 等等. 纪实的文笔不缺幽默, 浓厚的人文气息, 就像一幅美国的标准肖像.
整體上是個流水賬;即使有一些圍繞某一個主題的段落,但結構也是很鬆散的,並且轉摺總是來得很突兀。但是,Steinbeck的文筆實在是太好瞭,尤其是描寫自然環境的段落,有不少令人心動的金句。他特彆喜歡用精準的小詞,並且用擬人寫法寫自然,常常一個短句就可以容納大量的信息。全書分四個部分,第三部分是共鳴最強烈的,因為寫到俄勒岡的巨型紅木和加州的海岸綫(作者的傢鄉Salinas的部分寫的倒是不多,印象中主要寫瞭和親戚們對時事的爭吵)。第四部分進入瞭德州然後是幾個deep south州,有一些他對種族問題的觀察和思考。總而言之,整本書閱讀性不算太強,但如果不是太著急的話,書裏那些優美的段落會鼓勵著你一直讀下去。
