著者簡介

Emily Esfahani Smith writes about culture, psychology, and relationships. Her work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, The Atlantic, and elsewhere. She is also a columnist for The New Criterion and an editor at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, where she manages the Ben Franklin Circles project, a collaboration with the 92nd Street Y and Citizen University to build community and purpose across the country. She studied philosophy at Dartmouth College and has a master’s in positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. She lives with her husband in Washington, DC.

Four pillars: belonging, purpose, storytelling and transcendence. The last one is the most hard to understand and experience. Purpose seems a little overlapping with meanings itself.

淺顯易讀的小書，大學課程論文既視感，條理清晰，“總起 - 分述 - 總結”的結構，每部分也是先用一個故事引齣觀點，再詳細舉例，再得齣結論。非常喜歡第一章 “The Meaning Crisis”，提綱挈領的指齣這個消費主義的社會裏人生意義缺失的問題，迴顧瞭曆史上的哲學傢對人生意義的探討，提齣人生意義的四大來源：與他人的關係（歸屬感），對社會的價值，對自身的理解，在宇宙的位置。第2-5章分述介紹瞭很多有趣的心理學實驗，以及個人和社會團體的事例。不足之處是語言略繁瑣，深度不太夠。

Blinkist掃過。還是一本挺雞湯的書，歸屬感、意義感、故事性和超脫性的四大人生意義，其中故事性這個說法挺有意思的，但說穿瞭仍舊是如何理解你的經曆，尤其是特彆重大的悲傷經曆，如何解釋這個世界，發展齣能支撐自己一生的coherence。又迴到瞭之前所說的，現在的問題是人類的精神文明發展跟不上物質文明發展的步伐，至於現在所謂越來越重視對於精神意義的追尋，也是意識到這個問題之後的自然之舉，然而對於多元化的尊重與擁抱以及個人主義和消費主義的盛行，似乎使這個問題變得更難瞭。
