Hirsch mixes his tale of Gabriel with the stories of other poets through the centuries who have also lost children, and expresses his feelings through theirs. His landmark poem enters the broad stream of human grief and raises in us the strange hope, even consolation, that we find in the writer’s act of witnessing and transformation. It will be read and reread.

這是最近大受好評的一本詩集，一首長詩，一首哀歌，是失去兒子的父親、詩人Edward Hirsch的淚作。第一頁，父親看著棺材打開，露齣上半身的兒子，他的臉就像騰空一間屋子/他打扮整齊，就像要去參加一個葬禮。這樣一字一行寫齣悲痛，比失語艱難許多。這本書讓我想到莎朗-歐茨的《雄鹿之躍》，那種咬碎牙齒直麵人生的絞痛心腸，無法不令人動容而肅然。
