As feminist film theory has made clear, representational visibility has psychic and political limitations. Simply being in the public eye does not guarantee access to power. Still, among the Left and within the field of cultural/performance studies, there is an almost ubiquitous assumption that visibility is a crucial aspect of progressive struggle. In Unmarked, Peggy Phelan looks at the relation between political and representational visibility within both the mainstream and the avant-garde. Phelan examines the limitations of visibility politics, suggesting that there may be political power inherent in disappearance from the visual field.

Unmarked is a controversial study of the politics of performance, employing the emerging theories of psychoanalysis, feminism and cultural studies to examine an unusually broad conception of what Phelan considers performance; she cites examples from photography, film, theatre, anti-abortion demonstrations and performance art in her arguments. Phelan指齣性彆、種族等層麵的刻闆印象往往把弱勢群體理解為特定“肉身印記”的承載者，主流的平權運動認同representational visibility的重要性，試圖讓弱者被看見，而Phelan認為反抗的途徑恰恰是主動退齣視野去占據一個unmarked的位置，通過消解視覺再現的重要性來模糊自我／他者的二分。對visibility politics的質疑固然重要，但marked與unmarked之間的悖論無法被輕易拆解。Andrea Bachner對此書的批評：unmarked永遠是被un-marked之後的效應（被“標記”為unmarked），因此這種策略依然內在於marking的邏輯，其激進性或保守性也無法被預先裁斷。
