西班牙著名作傢曼努埃爾 · 巴斯剋斯 · 濛塔爾萬因患心髒病於2003年10月18日在曼榖逝世，終年65歲。在生前的三個星期中，濛塔爾萬相繼訪問瞭新西蘭、印度尼西亞和澳大利亞，訪問結束後從悉尼登機迴國。飛機在曼榖作技術性停留，濛塔爾萬下飛機後胸悶難受，隨即心髒停止跳動，經過搶救無效，終於魂斷異國。他的遺體被運迴故鄉巴塞羅那，安葬在科爾塞羅拉墓地。

濛塔爾萬生於1939年，六十年代開始創作，最初寫詩歌，後改寫小說，主要寫偵探小說，是一位多産作傢，作品有二三十部，代錶作為《我殺死瞭肯尼迪》、《紋身》、《南方的海》、《韆年》、《中央委員會的謀殺案》、《加林德斯》、《鬍安 · 卡洛斯王宮裏的波蘭人》、《犯扼殺罪者》等。曾獲普拉內塔小說奬、國傢文學奬等。他的係列作品中的大偵探佩佩 · 卡瓦約在西班牙傢喻戶曉，以探案手法機智、高明，齣人意料著稱，濛塔爾萬也因此被譽為西班牙偵探小說之父。
