西班牙著名作家曼努埃尔 · 巴斯克斯 · 蒙塔尔万因患心脏病于2003年10月18日在曼谷逝世，终年65岁。在生前的三个星期中，蒙塔尔万相继访问了新西兰、印度尼西亚和澳大利亚，访问结束后从悉尼登机回国。飞机在曼谷作技术性停留，蒙塔尔万下飞机后胸闷难受，随即心脏停止跳动，经过抢救无效，终于魂断异国。他的遗体被运回故乡巴塞罗那，安葬在科尔塞罗拉墓地。
