The Gunslinger 是The Dark Tower这套书的第一本，Roland是个枪手，他已经活了将近上千年了，他在寻找黑衣人，希望通过黑衣人找到黑暗塔，在一个唯一住着人的小镇，一个女牧师唆使所有小镇居民攻击他，他清洗了整个小镇，然后在路上他遇到一个男孩Jake, Jake住在纽约，然后出了车祸，死了，然后他的灵魂被黑衣人带动了这个地方，而他自己并不知道自己已经死了，Roland和Jake一起上路去找黑衣人，他们经过漫长的荒漠，然后经过无人的车站，车站里的列车员身体已经变成了木乃伊了，他们的衣服还是完好的，他们沿着铁路一直摸黑走了好多天，还受到僵尸的攻击，最后找到了黑衣人，根据神谕，Roland牺牲了Jake,Jake因为没有人及时搭救他而掉下了矿井，Roland继续寻找黑暗塔。
