諾曼·梅勒（1923-），美國著名作傢，國際筆會美國分會主席，美國“全國文學藝術院”院士，“美國文學藝術研究院”院士。

本書是作者的成名作，背景是第二次世界大戰中的太平洋戰場。故事被安排在一個虛構的熱帶小島上，通過兩條平行的綫索來展開復雜的情節。前一條綫索提供瞭生動有趣的戰爭情節，後一條綫索則深化瞭作品的主題，使作品的內涵更豐富，更深刻。

這個發生在南太平洋一個小島上的故事讓讀者看到美國軍隊內部官兵之間的關係，看到美國社會的一個縮影。因此《裸者與死者》超齣瞭戰爭文學的範疇，是一部帶有象徵意義的書，主題在於錶現獸性與理想在人類心靈中的搏鬥。

書名中的“裸者”，寓意“無遮無掩”、“毫無保障”，也可以理解為“人性已經暴露到赤裸裸的地步”。
